Is Your Google Business Profile Costing You Calls?

By Mahoney Digital · · 4 min read

When someone in Chillicothe or anywhere in Ross County needs a plumber, a roofer, a mechanic, or a hair appointment, a lot of them never make it to a website. They type what they need into Google, look at the map and the business listings that show up, and tap the call button right there. That listing is your Google Business Profile.

If your profile is out of date, thin, or missing details, you can lose that call to the shop down the road without ever knowing it happened. The good news is that most of the fixes are free and take an afternoon.

Why your profile matters so much for a local business

Your Google Business Profile is the box that shows your name, phone number, hours, photos, reviews, and directions when people search for you or for what you do nearby. Google says local results are based mainly on three things: how relevant your listing is to the search, how far you are from the person searching, and how well known your business is. You can't move your shop closer to every customer, but you can control how complete and accurate your listing is.

For a lot of small shops and trades, this listing gets more eyes than the website does. That makes it one of the cheapest places to win or lose a call.

Common problems that quietly cost you calls

Here are the issues I see most often when I look at local listings.

Wrong or old phone number

This is the big one. If you changed numbers, switched to a cell, or added a tracking line years ago, the old number may still be on your profile. Someone taps call, gets a disconnected line or a stranger, and moves on.

Hours that don't match reality

If your profile says you're open Saturday and you're not, you get a frustrated customer. If it says you're closed when you're open, you get nobody. Holiday hours matter too, especially around Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The wrong category

Your primary category tells Google what you are. A general contractor listed only as "Contractor" may miss searches for "roofing contractor" or "deck builder." Pick the primary category that fits your main work, then add secondary categories for the other services you really offer.

No photos, or only old ones

People want to see the work, the shop, the truck, or the team before they call. A listing with no photos or one blurry storefront picture looks less trustworthy than a competitor with recent shots of real jobs.

Reviews with no replies

Reviews help people decide, and replying shows you're paying attention. A short, polite reply to every review, good or bad, tells the next customer that a real person runs the place.

Service area that's unclear

If you work across Ross County and nearby counties but your profile only shows one town, people searching from Frankfort, Kingston, or Bainbridge may not be sure you'll come out. Set your service area to the places you actually serve.

Website link that goes nowhere useful

If your profile links to a dead site, an old Facebook page, or a homepage that's slow on a phone, you lose people right at the point they were ready to learn more.

A quick self check you can do today

Pull up Google on your phone, search your business name, and look at your listing like a customer would. Then ask:

  1. Is the phone number right, and does tapping it call you?
  2. Are the hours correct for this week?
  3. Does the main category describe your main work?
  4. Are there at least a few recent, real photos?
  5. Have you replied to your recent reviews?
  6. Does the website link work and load fast on your phone?
  7. Does the name, address, and phone match what's on your website?

If you answered no to any of these, that's a spot where calls can leak out.

Want a step by step list?

I put together a free checklist that walks through each part of your profile in plain terms. You can check items off as you go, and it only takes a few minutes to run through. Try the free Google Business Profile checklist. No signup needed.

Keep it current

A Google Business Profile isn't a one time setup. Hours change, services change, and new photos and reviews keep coming. Setting a reminder once a month to look at your listing for five minutes is enough for most small businesses to stay ahead.

It also helps to keep your website and your profile in sync. When your phone number, hours, and services match in both places, customers don't get mixed messages, and you don't have to wonder which one is right.
